Warning Signs of Dysgraphia

What is Dysgraphia

Among the many signs of dysgraphia, messy handwriting tends to be the most prevalent one. However, that symptom alone does not necessarily mean the child has writing difficulties. Below are other key challenges visible for those with dysgraphia: –

  • Tight, awkward, or painful grip on a pen or pencil
  • Difficulty forming complete letter shapes
  • Difficulty writing in on a straight line or within margins
  • Trouble writing sentence structure according to grammar rules
  • Skipping letters in written words
  • Spacing letters correctly in a word or sentence

As the child grows, the symptoms of dysgraphia will also typically change. While symptoms prevalent in children mainly are due to fine-motor impairments resulting in difficulty with the writing mechanics. On the other hand, signs such as challenges with syntax, grammar, comprehension, and translating thoughts on paper are common signs of dysgraphia in adults, including adolescents.
